asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will indicate the rate of wages paid to turf workers by Bord na Móna during the turf cutting seasons 1947, 1948, 1949 and 1950.

I am informed by Bord na Móna that the time rates for turf workers in the years mentioned by the Deputy were as follows: 1947, 1/3 per hour; 1948, 1/3 per hour; 1949, 1/4 per hour; 1950, 1/4 per hour.
The board state that practically all work is, however, carried out on piece rates, designed to enable the average worker to earn 25 per cent. above the time rate and this system of piece rates operated in each of the years mentioned.
