Vol. 122 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Disposal of Dublin Firm's Hosiery Stocks.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that considerable shortage of work has occurred amongst the workers employed by a firm of hosiery manufacturers in County Dublin by reason of the inability of the firm to dispose of accumulated stocks of over 20,000 dozen pairs of art and pure silk fully-fashioned stockings and whether, since agents in Britain are prepared to purchase these goods but have been refused import licences by the British Board of Trade, he will make immediate representations to the British Government to have the necessary permits issued to such agents, thereby enabling the redundant Irish workers to be re-empolyed.

I have been approached on behalf of the firm concerned in connection with the refusal of the Board of Trade to grant an import licence in respect of a consignment of pure silk stockings for which the firm obtained an order in Britain. I have made representations to the Board of Trade in the matter.
