Vol. 122 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Value of Tourist Industry.

asked the Taoiseach if he will give full details of how the estimated value of the tourist industry is calculated to be in excess of £30,000,000.

The value entered for the item "Net receipts in respect of tourism, travel, etc.," in the Balance of International Payments statement is the difference between (a) the expenditure of extern passengers in this country and (b) the expenditure of Irish residents abroad. Up to and including the year 1948 this figure was somewhat conjecturally estimated according to the method explained in the Irish Trade Journal and Statistical Bulletin, September, 1948, pages 114 et seq. For 1949, however, the estimate was based on the results of the passenger card inquiry, which yielded a net figure of £28,000,000, the difference between (a) which was estimated at £34,000,000 and (b) which was estimated at £6,000,000.
