Vol. 123 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - River Flooding.

asked the Minister for Lands whether he is aware of the extensive damage suffered by land holders due to the breaking of the banks of the River Fergus at Ing, Rossmanagher and Ballinacragga between Newmarket-on-Fergus and Sixmile-bridge, and if he will state what steps his Department propose to take to relieve the position and when that action will be taken.

asked the Minister for Lands if it is proposed to repair the breach in the banks of the River O'Garney at Rossmanagher, Sixmile-bridge; and, if so, when the work will begin.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I will take together Questions Nos. 20 and 22.

(1) Ing:—The Land Commission do not propose to carry out repairs to this embankment other than repairs which they may be requested to execute on behalf of, and at the expense of, other Departments.

(2) Rossmanagher:—Preliminary work was undertaken but had to be discontinued owing to high tides and adverse weather conditions. Proposals for comprehensive repairs are at present under consideration.

(3) Ballinacragga.—The Land Commission do not propose to carry out any embankment works in this townland.

I might add that the Land Commission have no liability for the repair or maintenance of any of the embankments in question.

Do I take it that the Minister says that in Rossmanagher the commission will undertake the construction of a bank, in consideration of the saving of a couple of hundred acres of land?

The position was that the preliminary work had to be discontinued owing to high tides and bad weather at the time. Proposals for comprehensive repairs are going on.

That means that the Land Commission are undertaking the responsibility of repairing the embankment.

They are undertaking the work.

They are undertaking the responsibility of saving the land.

I would not say they are undertaking the responsibility, as the responsibility rests on the tenants, in all cases where land has been vested.

There is no use in considering plans unless they propose to do some work.

They are undertaking the work but not the responsibility.
