Vol. 123 No. 8

- Soldiers' and Sailors' Land Trust.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is yet in a position to indicate whether a settlement has been reached between the Soldiers' and Sailors' Land Trust and the Government in relation to the insecurity of tenure of tenants of the trust.

Negotiations are at present proceeding and when they have advanced sufficiently to enable me to make a public statement on the matter I shall be glad to do so.

Is the Minister aware that several evictions have taken place during the last few months of tenants of the Sailors' and Soldiers' Land Trust? Will he use his good offices, and will the Taoiseach also use the good offices of the Government, to get the Sailors' and Soldiers' Land Trust to defer these evictions until some final settlement has been reached between the two Governments?

I can assure the Deputy that I am not so aware. I would like to have particulars and I will take whatever steps I can.

I have sent in one case in the last couple of days to the Department.

May I ask the Minister if he is aware whether the provisional arrangement entered into between himself and the trust has been approved by the British Government?

I am not in a position to answer that question. Proceedings are taking place and I think it would be indelicate and unwise to make a direct answer at this juncture.

And they are making satisfactory progress?
