Vol. 123 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Acquisition of Land.

Mr. Murphy

asked the Minister for Lands whether he is aware that an offer was made some nine months ago by four persons in the Dunmanaway area to dispose of some 200 acres of suitable forestry land in the townlands of Coolanaughtig and Shiplake to his Department; and, if so, if he will state whether the lands have since been inspected and if he will indicate the present position in the matter.

These lands will be inspected at an early date.

Mr. Murphy

Can the Minister say what he means by "an early date"?

I understand that an acquisition officer of the Department will visit the area shortly.

Mr. Murphy

Surely to goodness, his Department had time enough in the last 12 months?

The Deputy should remember that the forestry department have over 140,000 acres on offer. Up to a short time ago there was only one acquisition officer to deal with it. That has now been supplemented to bring the number up to 12. Naturally enough, there are arrears, due to short staffing in the past.

Mr. Murphy

What does the Minister mean by "inspected at an early date"?
