Vol. 123 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Skerries Compensation Claim.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will consider granting compensation to Mrs. Reynolds, 3 Rush Road, Skerries, in view of the fact that her late husband had 15 years' service with the Revenue Commissioners.

Mr. Reynolds served under the Revenue Commissioners for 14 years and 85 days. The Superannuation Acts provide for the payment of a gratuity in respect of an unestablished officer who dies while serving only if the officer has completed 15 years' service, and accordingly I am precluded from authorising the award of a gratuity to Mrs. Reynolds.

Does the Minister think that it is fair to treat an employee like that? I know that the law as it stands states as the Minister has stated here and that he can interpret it in no other way; but will the Minister not consider changing the law? The reason I raise this is to try to help some other employees who may be in the same circumstances. We should by now have reached the stage when at least the State would be a model employer.

That is very much like a speech.

I can raise it on the Adjournment.

The speech by the Deputy could have been delivered at any time in the last 15 years and he did not deliver it.

The Minister for Posts and Telegraphs will have to amend the regulations in that case.

That has nothing to do with this question.
