Vol. 123 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Imports and Production of Raw Wool.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state the quantity of raw wool (a) produced in, and (b) imported into this country in (1) 1947; (2) 1948; (3) 1949 and (4) 1950.

The estimated quantities of raw wool produced in this country in the years 1947, 1948, 1949 and in the first nine months of 1950 were 13,252,000; 12,152,000; 12,380,000 and 12,508,000 lbs. respectively. The quantities of raw wool imported in the same periods were 5,279,900; 4,569,200; 4,506,700 and 3,710,300 lbs.

Is it possible that home-produced raw wool could have been used instead of some of the wool that was imported?

A good deal of the raw wool produced here is used in the manufacture of carpets and it is not suitable for manufacture into cloth that is normally used here.
