Vol. 123 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Monaghan National School.

asked the Minister for Education if he will indicate the progress made in connection with the building of Clonrye National School.

I wish to refer the Deputy to the reply I gave him on the 30th March last. The modification in design then contemplated involved the provision of a water supply and waterflushed sanitation. Investigations in this matter have not yet been completed. Until it is possible to take a decision regarding this and until any necessary alterations in the plans of the school are made, it will not be possible to invite tenders for the building of the school. I am endeavouring to have the matter expedited.

Could the Minister say whether the Department are awaiting the installation of a water supply in the village before completing the matter?

No. The Department finished their side of this matter in September, 1949, but in March, 1950, the manager suggested that, instead of the dry closets arranged for, a water supply should be introduced. That involved the question of seeing whether water could be got and whether the land in the neighbourhood was such as to give the necessary soakage for a septic tank. It also involved, since March, the question of getting an alternative site. That question has been abandoned, but at present there is a representative of the Office of Public Works in the neighbourhood dealing with the question of whether the soil in the neighbourhood in such as to make it possible to have the use of a septic tank.
