Vol. 123 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fuel Supplies.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that fuel suppliers in County Dublin have told their customers that coal is in scarce supply and that there is a danger of its being rationed after Christmas; and, if so, whether he will state what arrangements he proposes to make to have other fuel made available.

I have no knowledge of what coal merchants told their customers but to meet the current high demand for coal, portion of the reserve stocks held by Fuel Importers, Limited, is being released.

Mr. Burke

Then the Parliamentary Secretary is aware that there is a coal shortage?

But you would not burn coal?

Mr. Burke

Will the Parliamentary Secretary tell the House what alternative fuel arrangement he is going to make if such is the case?

Merchants have been and are free to undertake the procurement of supplies.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will make a statement on the position regarding present and future supplies of foundry coke.

My information is that there is no immediate shortage of foundry coke, but the position is somewhat obscure as regards the future prospects of supplies.

Will the Parliamentary Secretary say if the British Government's decision to prohibit the export of coke applies to exports to this country?

I have no definite information as to the future, but existing contracts are being fulfilled.
