Vol. 123 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Irish Medical Graduates.

Mr. Brady

asked the Minister for Health if he will state what opportunities are at present open to surplus Irish medical graduates; what is their position in America; and, further, if he is satisfied that the present system of training is the best suited to such graduates.

The Deputy will be aware, I presume, of the arrangements which exist between Great Britain and ourselves under which Irish medical graduates may register with the General Medical Council of Great Britain.

There is provision in our legislation for the making of reciprocal arrangements between this and any other country under which our medical graduates may register there and their graduates may register here. The making of such arrangements is a matter in the first instance for the Medical Registration Council.

Regarding the second part of the question, the position of Irish graduates in the United States of America has been under examination recently. Certain representations have been made by our Embassy in Washington in this matter.

Some changes in the system of training of graduates have been recommended by the Consultative Committee on Medical Education. These recommendations, which have been the subject of consultation with the Medical Registration Council, are still under consideration.
