Vol. 123 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Irish Forms of Names.

Pádraig Ó Cuinneáin

asked the Minister for Health if he will set up machinery, if necessary by the introduction of proposals for legislation, whereby persons wishing to use the Irish forms of their names solely may do so without the necessity of changing their names by deed poll.

I am informed that, in law, an Irish citizen is entitled to use the Irish form of his name if he so wishes. The execution of a deed poll announcing the fact that a name is being or has been changed does not in itself effect such a change but merely provides evidence that a change has been made.

As I am anxious that persons desiring to give formal notice of their adoption of the Irish form of their names should be facilitated in doing so without having to incur any undue expense, I am arranging to have this question examined and I shall communicate further with the Deputy in the matter.
