Vol. 123 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Alleged Stealing of Bullocks.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state what steps were taken by the Gardaí to trace four bullocks alleged to have been stolen from the lands of Mrs. Julia Allen, Millgrove, Rathangan, County Kildare, in November, 1949; if it has been established that the bullocks were sold at Athy fair and were located but that no prosecution took place; if he will state whether the purchaser of the cattle gave details to the Gardaí of the person alleged to have sold them; and, if so, why the Gardaí did not act on this information.

This case is still the subject of Garda investigation, and the success of those investigations might be endangered if I made public the information in the possession of the Gardaí.

I can assure the Deputy that the fact that there has not been a prosecution so far is not due to any neglect of duty on the part of the Gardaí.

Is the Minister satisfied that, on the information which the purchaser of Mrs. Allen's four bullocks gave at Athy fair, the Gardaí are acting on that information?

I can assure the Deputy that the Gardaí are aware of the seller and if there are no proceedings they must be satisfied.
