asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will supply to members of the House the statistics for the years 1948-49 and 1949-50 corresponding to those already given for the preceding years in appendices B, C and D to the White Paper on the social security proposals.

As the reply to the Deputy's question is in the form of tabular statements I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to have it circulated with the Official Report.

The statistics asked for are as follows:—

†This amount represents the net cost to the State, after allowing for the amounts referred to in Note* above in which the State, employer, employee and dividends all contribute, of (a) the administration of the Department of Social Welfare and (b) services performed by other Government Departments on behalf of that Department. The total cost of administration is £1,225,000 as shown in columns 7 and 8 of the Table.

(2) Col. (12). The State Administration of National Health Insurance was merged in the Department of Social Welfare in 1947.

(3) Cols. (16) and (17). Cumann an Arachals Naisiunta ar Shlainte was dissolved under the Social Welfare Act, 1950, the functions of the Society being transferred to the Minister for Social Welfare on the transfer day, i.e., 1st August, 1950. On this day the National Health Insurance Reserve Fund and the Guarantee Fund ceased to exist and all sums standing to the credit of these Funds were carried to the credit of the National Health Insurance Fund. Col. (16). The figure for 1950 Includes the value at cost price (£394,281) of acquisitions under Section 21 of the Social Welfare Act, 1950.

(4) Col. (11). The figure for 1950 includes the appropriate payment under Section 15(a) of the Social Welfare Act, 1950, in respect of the period from the transfer day to 31st December, 1950.
