Vol. 124 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Provision of Telephones.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether he is aware of the need for the installation of a telephone (a) at Mount Uniacke sub-post office, Killeagh, County Cork; (b) at Gortroe sub-post office, Youghal, County Cork, and (c) at Ballindangan sub-post office, Mitchelstown, County Cork; and, if so, what steps he proposes to take to supply this need.

Mr. Murphy

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will make arrangements to have a telephone service provided at Shanlara sub-post office, Dunmanway, County Cork.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle I propose to take Questions Nos. 48 and 49 together.

As I stated in the House in reply to a similar question on the 8th November last, it is the intention of the Department to install a telephone in every post office. There are still over 700 post offices to be dealt with—most of them in remote areas—and the work will have to be spread over a number of years. In order that the best progress may be made, the order in which call offices are installed is determined mainly on engineering considerations.

It is not possible to say at present when call offices will be provided at Mount Uniacke, Gortroe, Ballindangan and Shanlara.
