Vol. 124 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Employment in Glengariff.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will have a special investigation made of conditions in the Glengariff area with a view to having special emergency employment schemes put into operation to relieve local distress.

As the Deputy is no doubt aware, workers on employment schemes are recruited solely from the unemployment assistance register, and allocations are made at the beginning of each winter for each part of the country in proportion to the number of unemployment assistance recipients in each. The number in Glengariff district electoral division in the last week of January was only four.

In view of the representations now made that there is local distress there, will the Parliamentary Secretary undertake to have this matter investigated?

I will, if such is the case.
