The average number of men employed on roads and bridges by direct labour in each of the calendar years 1948, 1949 and 1950 was 24,267, 20,542 and 17,659 respectively. The figures do not include the numbers employed on schemes under the Local Authorities (Works) Act, 1949, which in 1950 averaged 8,928.
