Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Technical Assistance Projects.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the nature of the technical assistance projects approved by E.C.A. for industry, and give the details in each case.

As the reply contains many details and figures, I propose, with the Ceann Comhairle's permission, to circulate a statement with the Official Report.

I should explain that the list of projects set out in the statement is not exhaustive. A larger number of other technical assistance projects for industry have been submitted to E.C.A., and while I understand that these have been accepted in principle, formal approval of E.C.A. is awaited.

Following is the statement:—

TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE PROJECTS RELATING TO INDUSTRY OFFICIALLY APPROVED BY E.C.A.

1. BORD NA MÓNA:

Provision of expert assistance from U.S.A. to advise on problems connected with the production of turf by mechanical means and the utilisation of turf industrially.

Dollar Cost $32,000. Non-dollar Cost £2,390.

2. COMHLUCHT SIÚICRE ÉIREANN:

Comprehensive programme of assistance in the fields of maintenance engineering, factory design, agricultural machinery, cost accounting, plant pathology and genetics.

Dollar Cost $78,000. Non-dollar Cost £6,500.

3. IRISH FLAKE OATMEAL MILLERS' ASSOCIATION:

Four representatives of the association visited the U.S.A. in May and June to study production methods and techniques.

Dollar Cost $2,900. Non-dollar Cost £1,072.

4. INDUSTRIAL SURVEY:

This survey is being undertaken by IBEC Technical Services Corporation, New York, and consists of a general economic survey with the particular object of ascertaining the industries that seem to hold most promise from the development point of view. This survey is being carried out in two phases; phase one being at present in progress.

Dollar Cost $175,000.

Non-dollar Cost—cannot be finally ascertained until completion of phase two.

5. IRISH STEEL HOLDINGS, LTD.:

Provision of expert advice on the present position and further development of the steel industry in Ireland.

Dollar Cost $5,000.Non-dollar Cost £500.
