Vol. 126 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Export of Tweed to Germany.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that grave inconvenience and in some cases heavy losses have been caused to Irish tweed exporters by the action of the German Government in suspending import licences for goods already ordered, despite the fact that German goods are permitted to enter this country in large quantities, and if he will state whether this matter was dealt with in the recent trade talks with German representatives; and, if so, with what result.

As announced in the newspapers on the 14th July, a draft trade agreement between this country and the Federal Republic of Germany has been initialled. If approved by both Governments, the trade agreement will cover trade between the two countries for the period, 1st July, 1951, to the 30th September, 1952. Until the agreement has been formally concluded, I am not in a position to furnish details as to its contents. I can inform the Deputy, however, that the subject of his question was amongst the matters discussed during the negotiations leading to the initialling of the draft agreement.
