Vol. 127 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Irish Law Textbooks.

asked the Minister for Justice whether he is aware that there is a grave shortage of textbooks on many aspects of Irish law and whether he will take steps to provide adequate textbooks by giving grants for the purpose to the Benchers of the Kings Inn or the Incorporated Law Society or otherwise.

In January, 1947, following an investigation of the matter by a committee of inquiry, I had the Incorporated Council of Law Reporting informed that a sum of £7,500 would be made available as a subsidy towards the cost of producing legal textbooks which would cover much the same ground as "Wylie", "Carleton", "Babington" and "O'Connor's Justice of the Peace". The scheme which had been suggested by the committee of inquiry provided that the incorporated council would assume responsibility for the nomination of editors and the general supervision of the editorial work. The offer to provide a subsidy on the basis indicated still holds.
