Vol. 128 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Howth Main Drainage Scheme.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state (a) the present position of the Howth main drainage scheme, (b) when it is expected to complete the entire scheme and (c) the approximate cost of the entire scheme.

(a) The Dublin Corporation invited tenders for two sections of the scheme comprising the laying of a sewer from Finglas to Malahide Road and from Malahide Road to Raheny. The corporation are not disposed to accept any of the tenders submitted for the works and have recently proposed to carry them out by direct labour instead. This proposal is at present under examination in my Department.

(b) I am not in a position to state when it is expected to complete the entire scheme. As explained, however, in reply to the Deputy's question of the 18th July last, when the laying of the sewer from Finglas to Malahide Road and from Malahide Road to Raheny has been completed, the high-level area scheduled for early development can be drained to a temporary outfall pending the completion of the further section from Raheny to the outfall at Howth.

(c) The cost of the entire scheme was estimated by the Dublin Corporation in 1949 to be £1,535,000.
