Vol. 128 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Central Bank Report.

asked the Minister for External Affairs if the recent report of the Central Bank was referred or otherwise summarised in the Official Bulletin of his Department; and, if so, whether the repudiation of such report by the Government was equally publicised in such bulletin; and, if so, on what date.

As the editorial staff endeavour to include matter in the Official Bulletin in proportion to its interest for its readers abroad, no reference was made to the recent Report of the Central Bank and the discussions which took place on its contents here.

Most countries in which the bulletin circulates are very preoccupied with their own inflationary troubles and many of them have reached the stage in which, having already spent all or nearly all their external reserves, they are frantically seeking to protect what is left or begging for foreign loans. In such circumstances, I think it was as well not to impose upon the bulletin's non-technical reader a recital of the causes of our particular financial situation.

Do I understand the Minister to say that no reference was made in the bulletin to the Report of the Central Bank?

I think the Minister ought to read the bulletin a little more carefully. May I take it from the fact that the alleged repudiation of the Report of the Central Bank by the Government was not reported in the bulletin that the alleged repudiation was only eye-wash to get out of the debate on the Supplies and Services Bill?

I have no control over it.
