Vol. 128 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Galway Estate.

asked the Minister for Lands if the Land Commission have had an inspection carried out of the Marley turbary on the Grattan-Bellew estate, County Galway; and, if so, with what result, particularly with the view to acquiring it for distribution among suitable allottees, and if the inspection has not yet been carried out, if he will urge upon the Land Commission the desirability of having it attended to with the greatest expedition, having regard to the very considerable and urgent demand for turbary in that locality.

Preliminary inquiries have been made in this case and it is proposed to have an inspection carried out as soon as possible.

Is it not a fact that at the moment the sugar company are carrying out an inspection there with a view to using the bog for beet growing in that area? If that happens, it will be a very serious matter since at least 60 people will be deprived of getting turf from that bog.

I think that matter has been taken into consideration. All the advantages or disadvantages of that course will be carefully considered before a final decision is given.

I hope that the Land Commission will act more rapidly than they usually do.
