Vol. 129 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Naas Fever Hospital.

asked the Minister for Health if he will state whether any communication was addressed by his Department to the Kildare County Council or to any other county council about the use of the fever hospital at Naas since 1st July, 1951; and, if so, the nature of such communication.

Several letters were sent to the Kildare County Council since 1st July, 1951, regarding the use of Naas Fever Hospital for the accommodation of tuberculosis cases. A letter was sent to five other county councils stating that Naas Fever Hospital was regarded as more suitable than Abbeyleix Fever Hospital as an isolation centre for smallpox cases, should the necessity arise and stating that, before designating that hospital for the purpose, it was desired to know whether that arrangement was regarded as satisfactory.

Does the Minister not think that before offering the hospital in Naas to another county, he might at least have asked the people who are responsible for paying portion of the cost that put it there?

The Kildare County Council.

They were asked several times about it.

Does the Minister suggest that the Kildare County Council were asked to give the Naas Fever Hospital as a smallpox isolation unit before offering it to other counties?

May I inform him that the elected representatives were never so informed?

My predecessor, Deputy Costello, wrote to the Kildare County Council about it.

The county manager never brought it before us anyhow.

I do not know about that.
