asked the Minister for Local Government if, in view of the great increases in the price of timber, cement and other building materials, he will consider giving an increase of at least 50 per cent. in housing and reconstruction grants so as to encourage persons in rural Ireland to build more and better houses and get rid of the slum menace and tubercular tenements; and, further, if he will sanction the free-for-all grant to Kerry County Council for housing.

The matter raised in the first part of the Deputy's question is appropriate for discussion in connection with new housing legislation which will be introduced shortly.
Approval has issued to the scheme submitted by the Kerry County Council relating to the making of grants by the council under Section 7 of the Housing (Amendment) Act, 1950.
