Vol. 129 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Market for Carrots.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware that there is a surplus of carrots in Mayo; and, if so, what steps he proposes to take to provide a market for this crop, at an economic price.

Mr. Walsh

I am not aware of any substantial surplus of carrots in County Mayo. If, however, supplies are in excess of the local demand no difficulty should be experienced in disposing of good quality carrots to the usual wholesalers.

When the Minister mentions "usual wholesalers" does he mean that the carrots would be for export?

Mr. Walsh

No. They are making from £12 to £14 per ton on the Dublin market.

Does the Minister consider that that is a good price?

Mr. Walsh

The Deputy did not ask me that question. I said that there was a market for them.

I did ask that question.
