Vol. 129 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Disposal of Córas Iompair Éireann Steel Tracks.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will make representations to Córas Iompair Éireann to make available to farmers or others in the district requiring them, the old steel tracks, now removed and being replaced by new ones, on the railway line around Listowel, County Kerry.

Subject to the official restrictions on export of steel scrap, the matter to which the question refers is one on which the decision rests entirely with the board of Córas Iompair Éireann and I am not prepared to make representations as suggested.

Is it true that the Minister for Industry and Commerce has directed the board of Córas Iompair Éireann to accept a certain price for this scrap metal from a domestic purchaser and refused to permit them to export it so long as that price was available?

I have said in my reply that there are restrictions on the export of this commodity.

Has not the Minister in fact ordered Córas Iompair Éireann to sell this stuff for £3 10s. per ton to Irish Steel, Limited and defrayed the resultant loss to Córas Iompair Éireann by an Estimate in this House?

Irish Steel, Limited does not buy scrap metal from Córas Iompair Éireann.

Well now, there is some "wrangle" on there.
