Vol. 131 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Ratepayers—Increased Levy.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state the increased levy on the ratepayers in each county, urban and city area as a result of a circular letter sent from his Department on the 4th or 6th May, 1951, concerning increased salaries or bonuses for officials of local authorities employed under the sanction of his Department.

No circular letter of the kind mentioned was issued by my Department on the 4th or 6th May, 1951, but a circular letter was issued on the 14th July, 1951, authorising the payment of increased remuneration to officers of vocational education committees on the basis of the arbitration award made in that year to civil servants. This was in accordance with usual practice. The approximate amount of the increase falling on the rates in each county, urban and city area is shown in a schedule which, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to have circulated with the Official Report.

Following is the schedule:—

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state the increased levy on the ratepayers in each county, urban and city area as a result of Circular Letter E.L. 4/51 dated 4th May, 1951, issued by his Department.

Details of the additional expenditure to be borne by the ratepayers in each county, urban and city area, as a result of temporary increases in remuneration granted to local officers in respect of whom I am the appropriate Minister, are not available and would be difficult to calculate.

A good deal of time would be expended in the compilation of the exact figures and it is doubtful if the result would justify the work involved.
