Vol. 131 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Boot and Shoe Industry Unemployment.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that the workers employed in a boot company in Cork are on one day's work per week; further, if he is aware that a shoe company in Cork is closed down for an indefinite period; and, if so, what steps he has taken to restore employment to the workers concerned.

I am aware that, for some months past, these firms, in common with other firms in the footwear industry, have been compelled to curtail production, with a consequent reduction of employment.

I have already taken steps to ensure that the home market is reserved almost entirely for the home manufacturers and the Government is endeavouring to help the situation by placing orders for additional supplies of Army footwear.

Is the Minister aware that there is some outside firm taking over a boot factory in Cork, although they are nearly all closed down?

Whether I have official knowledge I do not know, but if the Deputy will put down a question I will get the information for him.
