Vol. 132 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Corporation Loan.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he has received repeated requests from the Dublin Corporation for sanction to float a £5,000,000 loan; and, if so, whether, in view of the fact that unless this sanction is granted, or funds made available to the Dublin Corporation from other sources, the housing programme of the Dublin Corporation will be held up, he will communicate his decision to the Dublin Corporation at an early date.

I received an application from Dublin Corporation on 27th March last requesting sanction to the raising of a loan of £3,905,000. I informed the corporation on 25th April last that I would be prepared to sanction the borrowing of this amount on receipt of specific proposals. Meanwhile, there is no question of the housing programme being held up for want of funds.

Is it not correct that the Minister received a letter on 31st January, a second letter on 12th February, a third letter on 3rd April and still another letter on 29th April, asking for replies to the earlier letter? Do I take it from the Minister's reply that he has replied to these letters now?

Many letters are received in the Department, but the Deputy will be relieved to know that, in so far as this matter of financing the programme of the Dublin Corporation is concerned, the corporation is in no difficulty at the moment and, in fact, has finances galore for the next three months.
