Vol. 132 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Radio Éireann Announcers.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will state (a) the qualifications required to be possessed by a successful candidate for the position of announcer on Radio Éireann; (b) the tests or examinations to be undergone and (c) the measures in operation to ensure that errors in pronunciation, etc., will be reduced to a minimum, if not entirely eliminated.

The main qualifications sought in candidates for announcer positions in Radio Éireann are: A high standard of general education and a good knowledge of current affairs. Ability to speak both English and Irish with fluency and correctness and some knowledge of at least a third European language. A suitable radio voice. A temperament that will ensure coolness in work that tends at times to induce nervous tension.

Method and accuracy in the recording of programme details.

These are the ideal qualifications, but we must be satisfied if applicants have a reasonable number of them to a reasonably good degree.

Applicants are submitted to a microphone test, which is recorded, and are also interviewed. Those who pass the test and interview are tried out under actual broadcasting conditions for a period before a final conclusion is reached as to their suitability.

Announcers' work is kept under constant observation and they are given advice and instruction in regard to pronunciation and the various aspects of announcing technique.
