Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bord na Móna Employees.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the total number of men at present employed by Bord na Móna on turf production, excluding administrative or office personnel.

Mr. Lynch

I am informed by Bord na Móna that the total number of men employed by the board on turf production, excluding administrative or office personnel, was 5,291 at the 29th May, 1952, the latest date for which complete figures are available.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the average rate of wages paid to turf cutters employed by Bord na Móna in each of the years 1947 to 1952, inclusive.

Mr. Lynch

I am informed by Bord na Móna that, in the case of unskilled turf workers, the time rates prevailing during the greater part of each of the years mentioned by the Deputy were as follows:—

1947 and 1948

1/3 per hour

1949 and 1950

1/4 per hour

1951

1/8 per hour

1952

1/9 per hour

The board state that most of their operations are carried out on piece rates which are so fixed as to enable the average worker to earn 25 per cent. above the time rate.
