Vol. 133 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Workmen's Compensation Acts.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare whether, in view of the fact that the cost of living has increased by over 20 per cent. since last year he will introduce proposals for legislation to provide for an immediate increase in the amount of benefit payable under the Workmen's Compensation Acts to injured workmen.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will state whether it has been decided to introduce proposals for legislation to increase the weekly payments to injured workers under the Workmen's Compensation Acts; and, if so, the extent of the increase.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 8 and 9 together.

As examination of this matter in my Department is not yet completed, I am not in a position to announce a decision.

The Minister promised some months ago that, when the Social Welfare Bill would be through, he would deal with this. It is a very pressing matter.

I am dealing with it now.
