Vol. 556 No. 3

Written Answers. - Adult Education.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

725 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs if he has received an application from Mayfield Community Adult Learning Project, c/o Newbury House, Old Youghal Road, Mayfield, County Cork, for funding for an administrator of the project. [20580/02]

Mayfield community adult learning project, (CALP), has been indirectly supported through my Department's community development programme since early 2000. Through an enhanced funding scheme made available to participating projects in this programme, Mayfield community development project received funding additional to their core budget to support the CALP project. The enhanced funding scheme was designed to offer limited funding to projects to undertake additional work, which could not otherwise be carried out within available core staffing resources. Under this enhanced funding scheme, Mayfield CDP received £47,337, €60,105, over a two year period to employ a co-ordinator for the CALP project. This funding was provided on a strictly time limited basis with an expiry date of April 2002, in the case of funding in respect of the CALP project.

Mayfield CDP received a further special once-off payment of €25,000 earlier this year to assist in sustaining the project until end 2002 and to allow the project additional time to source alternative funding. I understand that the CALP project has now secured a funding commitment from the Department of Education and Science in the sum of €45,000 to fund the co-ordinator position for 2003. CALP is now seeking funding from my Department to employ an administrator. The question of further support to the CALP project through the community development support programmes is being considered in light of the overall resource availability and competing demands within the programmes. The availability of funding from other sources will also be a factor in the decision making process.
