Vol. 134 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Football and other Pools.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will make a statement on the present position of football and other pools operating in the State and indicate the number still operating despite the advice of his Department recently publicised.

A warning was given in the public Press on the 7th and 8th September by the Department that pools were unlawful.

I am informed that, with one exception, the promoters of these pools have ceased their activities. It is my intention to see that the law in this respect is strictly observed and suitable instructions in the matter have been issued to the Garda Síochána.

Would the Minister not give consideration to the question of permitting these pools in the case of organisations such as the St. Vincent de Paul Society and other charitable organisations to enable them to build up funds? The Minister surely is aware of the fact that a great deal of gambling has taken place in this connection by certain people who are out to make profits for themselves. Would he give special consideration to the question of permitting charitable organisations only to carry on pools?

I cannot say anything about that at the moment but I would point out to the Deputy that, in view of the answer which I have given, he will see that it would be quite improper for me to go any further than I have gone.

The position is then that all these pools from this date are ended?

That is right.

Would the Minister not be prepared to reconsider the whole question in the light of information which might be supplied to him by charitable and religious organisations who are anxious to raise funds?

I shall bring the Deputy's remarks to the attention of the Minister.
