Vol. 134 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Goods Deliveries to Bunclody.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that the only guaranteed deliveries of merchandise to Bunclody, County Wexford, are on Tuesdays and Fridays each week, and that these deliveries often arrive in the town as late as 8 p.m., with resultant hardship to the local community; and, if so, if he will ensure better facilities to the town and district in the immediate future.

The Transport Act, 1950, placed full responsibility on the board of Córas Iompair Éireann for providing an efficient, economical, convenient and properly integrated system of public transport, including road merchandise transport. Any question relating to the adequacy of the road merchandise service to Bunclody should, accordingly, be addressed direct to Córas Iompair Éireann.

If, as I understand, Córas Iompair Éireann have made representations to the Minister to limit private lorries in their activities, surely the Minister is in a position to suggest to Córas Iompair Éireann the provision of a decent service for the people living in the Bunclody area? Deliveries of merchandise to this area are often as late as 8 o'clock, and businesses have to stay open to take deliveries. Surely the Minister could make representations to Córas Iompair Éireann in this matter?

I am sure the company will give consideration to any representations which they may receive from traders in the locality.
