Vol. 134 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Local Authorities (Works) Act.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware that the Tralee Urban District Council submitted a scheme under the Local Authorities (Works) Act, 1949, for the diversion of the river from Sunday's Well to the Big River to alleviate the flooding at St. Brendan's Park and Rock Street; and, if so, if he will now state the reasons for not sanctioning the scheme.

While I could not give any advance undertaking as regards a grant towards the work in question, the problem has been shown, in correspondence we have had with the council, to be full of complexities which it is the duty of the council to investigate. I have no evidence that the necessary investigation and planning have been carried out locally. It is, of course, the council's responsibility to decide whether it is worth while to do so and in these circumstances I cannot at present indicate my agreement with the proposal.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state if his Department received a proposal from Tralee Urban District Council under the Local Authorities (Works) Act, 1949, for a grant for the cleansing of the Big River which flows through the town; and, if so, if he will now state if it is proposed to sanction the scheme.

A proposal submitted by the Tralee Urban District Council under the Local Authorities (Works) Act, 1949, for the cleaning of the Big River within the town is the subject of correspondence between the council and my Department. I cannot say at this stage whether the proposal will be approved.
