Vol. 136 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - River Maine Survey.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he is now in a position to state when the survey of the Maine catchment area will be undertaken by his Department.

I am not yet in a position to state when a survey of the Maine catchment under the Arterial Drainage Act, 1945, can be undertaken.

I would refer the Parliamentary Secretary to a letter received from his Department in February, 1952, in which it was stated that, on the completion of the survey of the Moy, the Maine catchment area would be surveyed, and I would submit to the Parliamentary Secretary that, now that the survey of the Moy is almost complete, he and his Department would honour that undertaking given in the letter to me.

I do not know about any undertaking of that kind being given. Furthermore, I am not prepared to give any such undertaking to anybody in regard to any particular river, because various factors arise from time to time which relate closely to any decision that may be given in that respect. For instance, there are State Departments and institutions whose activities will have to be taken into consideration in deciding what priority will be given.

In view of the fact that this scheme was shelved by Deputy Donnellan when he was Parliamentary Secretary——

Who told you that?

——and shelved a second time by another Galway Deputy, I would like that Deputy Donnellan and men like him should face up to the fact that he wronged the people of Kerry in shelving this scheme which was our just right.

Is this the Adjournment, or a supplementary question?

I want to prevent that happening again.
