Vol. 136 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Passenger Movements.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state the total of passenger movements by sea to and from the State for each of the years 1949, 1950, 1951 and 1952, showing in each case the outward balance.

I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to circulate in the Official Report a statement providing the required information.

Following is the statement:—

asked the Taoiseach if he will state (a) the net passenger movement outward for the years 1950, 1951 and 1952; (b) the estimated emigration for the years 1950, 1951 and 1952, and (c) when it is proposed to introduce a comprehensive and effective method of gauging emigration from this country.

With reference to (a) of the Deputy's question, the balance of passenger movement by sea, rail, road (omnibus) and air was 196 inward in 1950, 9,860 outward in 1951, and 18,088 outward in 1952. These balances take no account of passenger movement by road in private vehicles or on foot, statistics of which are not available.

With regard to (b), in 1950 the estimated number of emigrants to all parts was 78,000, and the estimated number of immigrants (including persons returning from employment) was 37,000, so that the estimated net emigration was 41,000. It is not possible to furnish estimates for 1951 and 1952 for reasons given to the Deputy in my reply on 22nd October, 1952.

With regard to (c), may I refer the Deputy to my reply to a question by Deputy Mac Fheórais on the same subject on 2nd December, 1952?
