Vol. 136 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bilingual Certificate Examination

asked the Minister for Education if he will state (a) on what date the results of the examination for the bilingual certificate held on 6th March, 1952, were issued; (b) how many recognised national teachers sat for that examination, and (c) how many failed in paper I and how many failed in paper II in that examination.

asked the Minister for Education whether a candidate who passed in one paper in the bilingual certificate examination, but failed in the other paper, is exempted fromfurther examination in the paper in which he or she was successful; and whether it would not be possible to give candidates who have failed a longer period to prepare for the next examination.

I shall take Questions Nos. 48 and 49 together.

The bilingual certificate examination is in two parts—a written examination in March and an oral test subsequently for the teachers who reach a certain standard at the written portion of the examination. The oral test is conducted by an inspector of the Department in the teacher's school usually subsequent to the summer vacation period.

Two hundred and seventy-three national teachers sat for the bilingual certificate examination in 1952; 38 failed in paper I and 53 failed in paper II. A candidate who is adjudged to have failed in one of the two papers is regarded as having failed the written portion of the examination and is required to take both papers at a subsequent examination. The general issue of results for the 1952 examination was on 8th December, 1952. While I cannot give a definite undertaking that all results will be issued at an earlier date in future years, every effort will be made to have results issued as early as possible.
