Vol. 138 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Whiskey Exports.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state the total (a) quantity and (b) value of Irish whiskey exported in 1952.

The quantity of Irish whiskey exported in 1952 was 366,408 proof gallons, valued at £499,391.

I understood the Parliamentary Secretary to say that the amount involved is less than £500,000.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that the export of Scotch whiskey in the same period was worth £32,500,000? Would he not consider the time is ripe to reorganise the distilling trade so that we can export as much whiskey as possible.

That is a separate question.

It is not a separate question.

It is a different question altogether and it should be directed to a different Minister.

In view of the fact that the question is addressed to the Taoiseach am I not entitled to ask a supplementary question?

The Deputy has only asked for statistics. If he wants information in relation to the development of export trade his question should be addressed to the Minister for Industry and Commerce.

In view of the fact that the Central Office of Statistics has given these particular figures am I not in order in asking that the statistics should be increased by increasing the production of whiskey?

I have told the Deputy that he asked only for statistics. The Department of the Taoiseach is not responsible for the development of export trade. That is a matter for the Minister for Industry and Commerce.
