Vol. 138 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Demolition of Coastguard Stations.

asked the Minister for Finance if and when it is proposed to demolish the burned down coastguard stations situated along our seaboard which are eyesores and which detract from the appearance of seaside resorts.

Of some 140 former coastguard stations taken over on the establishment of the State in 1922, all but about 20 have been disposed of by way of sale, surrender, lease, letting, etc. Efforts to dispose of the balance are being continued and it is not proposed meanwhile to undertake demolition works at the sites.

Could the Town Planning Act not be amended by the introduction of a section compelling the owners or lessees of these derelict properties to pull them down, and so remove these eyesores?
