asked the Minister for Defence if he will state the rates of gratuities or retirement grants paid to officers (by rank) leaving the Army on pension after 21 years' service and the corresponding rates paid to N.C.O.s and men.
Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Officers' Retirement Grants.
As the answer to the question is in the form of a tabular statement, I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to have it circulated with the Official Report.
I should explain that, as a result of the increase in Army pay which took place on the 1st April, 1953, the rates set out in the statement are due to be increased in respect of personnel who retired or were discharged since that date. I regret I am not yet in a position to bring the necessary statutory instrument before the House for approval.
I may also say that I have a simplified pensions scheme for N.C.O.s and men under consideration. I hope that this scheme will provide for the payment of gratuities as well as pensions to N.C.O.s and men discharged after 21 or more years' service.
