Vol. 147 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bacon Prices Order: Amendment.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that, as a result of the recent amendment of the Bacon Prices Order, choicest cuts of bacon have been placed beyond the reach of some consumers, and, if so, if he will state his reasons for making the amendment.

The recent Order revising the maximum prices which may be charged for bacon was made by me on the recommendation of the Prices Advisory Body. The price revision was occasioned primarily by an increase in the curers' price of bacon, reflecting an increase in the price of pigs.

A proposal designed to effect a more equitable spread of prices over the different cuts of bacon, to conform to the pattern of public demand, was made in the course of the recent public inquiry into bacon prices. This proposal was accepted by the Prices Advisory Body and included in their recommendation to me.
