Vol. 148 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Waterford Fish Meal Plant.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether his attention has been drawn to a recent article in regard to the drop in the price of herrings resulting from a glut in the market owing to exceptionally heavy catches off Dunmore East Harbour and the urgent need for the establishment of a fish-meal plant at Dunmore East; and, if so, if he will make a statement in the matter, indicating what steps are being taken to help fishermen and the fishing trade generally by the establishment of such a factory.

I have seen the article referred to by the Deputy. The erection of fish-meal factories is a matter requiring very close examination. I understand that. An Bord Iascaigh Mhara have the question under consideration and that the suitability of Dunmore East, among other places, will be fully considered as a site should it be decided to proceed with the erection of a factory on the south coast.
