Vol. 153 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rural Electrification.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce (a) when the E.S.B. last carried out a canvass in the Kylemore, Knock, Inverin, Tully, Rosaveele, Carraroe, Lettermore and Lettermullen areas, County Galway, and what was the result of the canvass, and (b) when rural electrification is likely to be extended to these thickly populated areas.

I am informed by the E.S.B. that Kylemore is included in the Letterfrack rural area and that a canvass of that area carried out by the board in the spring of 1953 disclosed that 58 per cent. of the householders were willing to take supply. I am also informed by the board that the townlands of Knock, Inverin, Tully, Rosaveele and Carraroe are included in the Carraroe rural area and that the last canvass of this area which was carried out last summer disclosed that 47 per cent. of the householders were willing to take supply. Both of these areas have been considered by the board on a number of occasions for development under the rural electrification scheme, but have not, so far, been selected as their returns have not compared favourably with those of other areas still awaiting development in the Galway district. I am unable to state when the development of these areas is likely to take place.

I am informed by the board that Lettermore and Lettermullen are included in the Lettermore area, but that a canvass of the householders in that area has not yet been carried out by the board. Until the results of such a canvass are available, it would not be possible to indicate the area's prospects of being selected for development.
