Vol. 153 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Westmeath Lands.

asked the Minister for Lands what action has been taken by the Land Commission towards the acquisition of the Bellingham estate, near Rathconrath, County Westmeath, for the relief of congestion in the area.

Proceedings were instituted for the acquisition of part of the Bellingham estate but were subsequently discontinued.

Would the Minister give us the reason why they were discontinued?

The Land Commission does not give reasons for its decision.

Were they discontinued on the grounds that there was bloodstock on this draw farm?

No, the Land Commission does not say.

I give notice that I propose to raise this matter on the Adjournment.

I will communicate with the Deputy.

asked the Minister for Lands what action has been taken by the Land Commission towards the acquisition of the Isodore Murtagh estate, Davidstown, County Westmeath, for the relief of congestion in the area.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state the present position in regard to the division of the Murtagh estate, Davidstown, Mullingar, County Westmeath.

I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to deal with Questions Nos. 24 and 25 together.

Proceedings for the acquisition of this estate were in progress earlier this year, but when the Appeal Tribunal had fixed the price on appeal the Land Commission decided that it was inexpedient to proceed with the purchase of the lands and they accordingly withdrew.

Is the Minister aware that there are a number of small-holders, who pay large amounts annually for conacre and grazing, living around this estate, that the estate itself has been let for a number of years on the 11 months' system, and that it is non-residential? In view of these facts will the Minister have the matter re-examined?

I will bring the Deputy's remarks to the notice of the commission.
