Vol. 153 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Migration of Achill Tenants.

asked the Minister for Lands whether the Land Commission are aware that the average valuation of holdings in the majority of townlands in the electoral district of Corraun, Achill, and especially on the Dickens estate, is amongst the lowest in the country, and, if so, whether the commission propose to arrange for the migration of any tenants from this area in the near future.

The Land Commission are aware of the congestion which exists in the Corraun district but, as I indicated in my reply to a rather similar question by the Deputy on the 15th December, 1954, there is a general reluctance among the tenants to migrate to eastern areas and to abandon their present means of livelihood. The problem is to find an adequate number of suitable and willing migrants so that the holdings of those remaining can be properly rearranged and improved, but just now I can see little prospect of achieving that. The position, however, is under constant review.
