Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Investments in British Securities.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the amounts invested in British Government securities at any date during the first six months of 1949 by (a) the eight Associated Banks, (b) the Central Bank, (c) the Post Office Savings Bank, (d) the various Government Departments, and (e) the Irish Hospitals' Sweepstake Committee.

The gross external assets of the Associated Banks at 15th March, 1949, included "Government securities" of £160.6 million, their net external assets at that date being £134,000,000. Holdings of British Government securities by the Central Bank for the Legal Tender Note Fund amounted to £43.4 million at 31st March, 1949. Particulars of the investments of the General Fund are not published.

The nominal value of British Government securities held on behalf of the Post Office Savings Bank Fund at 31st March, 1949, was £34.8 million and on behalf of other Departmental (including Court) Funds was £18.7 million.

British Government securities of a nominal value of £4.6 million were held by the Hospitals' Trust Board at 31st March, 1949.
