Vol. 155 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mayo Migrants.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state the reason why no migrants have been taken from Toorglass, Belmullet, this year, and whether any undertaking was given to the tenants that the townland would be rearranged this year.

Final decisions as regards migration each year are based on a number of factors including the circumstances of the various applicants, the suitability of their lands for use in effecting rearrangement and the number of new holdings which are available for disposal. By reason of these considerations it was not found possible to effect any migrations from Toorglass this season. I would mention, however, that in 1953 four tenants from Toorglass were offered exchange holdings in the eastern countries but they refused to accept the holdings offered. As far as I am aware, no undertaking was given to the tenants that the townland would be rearranged this year.
